The mind of a child is innocence itself. Innocence that is often destroyed by the spiteful nature of frustrated adults. More so than not, violence is the cause, either malicious or accidental, physical or verbal.

The impact on a young impressionable mind is far too easily underestimated or dismissed. "That's life", we tell ourselves. "That's how she/he becomes a woman/man", goes the infuriatingly heartless phrase.

The sad thing is, we're all guilty of speaking it at some point in our lives. While I have managed to escape abuse and the harsh realities of a broken home in my own manner, admittedly not always for the better nor always in the best manner,

I can't help but wonder how my sisters have dealt, still deal, and will deal with it. One won't talk much, and the other much younger ones I dare not even burden with my questions. Not yet at least. What I can say however is how strong I find each one of them. I have four loving sisters, one more fascinating than the last.
And what certainly fascinates me most is their ability to endure.

I wonder if I've ever had that strength? I suppose I have answered my own question just by asking it. 'The Courageous Ones' is my ode to that strength I admire so strongly. Dearest sisters, may you become an inspiration to us all.
